How App Control Works on Permanent Lights (and Do You Need Wi-Fi?)
You run everything from an app: warm white, color, zones, brightness, and dusk-to-dawn schedules. Yes, it uses Wi-Fi, which is why we plan coverage. Here is how it works, plus the honest word on voice control.
Everything runs from an app on your phone: warm white every night, full color for the holidays and game days, brightness, zones, and a dusk-to-dawn schedule that turns the whole thing on and off without you touching it. Yes, the system uses your Wi-Fi, which is exactly why a good installer plans for coverage before a single light goes up. Here is what you actually control, how the app and Wi-Fi fit together, and the honest answer on Alexa and Google Home.
What you control from the app
A permanent architectural system is not a light switch, it is a small lighting controller you run from your phone. From the app you can:
- Set the everyday look, a real warm white that most people leave on almost every night of the year.
- Switch to color on demand: red and green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, your team on game day.
- Dim the whole house or a single run.
- Split the house into zones, so the garage does not have to match the gable.
- Schedule it dusk to dawn, or to any hours you want, so it runs itself.
That last one is the part people end up using most. Once it is set, the house lights itself at dusk and shuts off on schedule, and you rarely open the app at all.
Do you need Wi-Fi?
Yes. The controller connects to your home Wi-Fi so the app can reach it, and that is where a lot of DIY setups quietly fall apart: the controller ends up at the far corner of the house, the signal barely reaches, and the lights drop offline. This is what Ryan means when he says the install has to put “Wi-Fi that actually reaches” on the list. Part of designing the system is placing the controller and confirming coverage so it stays connected, instead of leaving you to troubleshoot a weak signal from a ladder. It is a small thing that is invisible when it is done right and maddening when it is skipped.
Once it is set up, day-to-day use is mostly hands-off. The dusk-to-dawn schedule runs on its own, so the house lights itself each evening and you rarely need to open the app at all. When you do want to change the color, dim a zone, or adjust the schedule, you do it from the app.
What about Alexa and Google Home?
Here is the honest part, because it matters and we are not going to fudge it. The system we install runs from its own dedicated app. It does not integrate with Alexa or Google Home for voice control today. If running your outdoor lights by voice, or tying them into a whole-home platform like Control4, is a genuine dealbreaker for you, that is a fair requirement and you should ask any company directly whether they support it, because some brands do and we currently do not.
What we would rather give you than a voice command is a system that is designed, installed, and supported by the same local people, and an app that covers scheduling, color, zones, and dimming. For most homeowners the dusk-to-dawn schedule does the job a voice command would, automatically, every night. If you are weighing that tradeoff specifically, our JellyFish comparison lays out where a voice-integrated brand leads and where we do.
Why the controller placement matters
It is worth saying plainly, because it is the difference between a system you love and one that annoys you. A permanent system is only as reliable as its connection, and its connection depends on where the controller lives and whether the Wi-Fi reaches it. Planning that up front, alongside clean corners, balanced runs, and power where it belongs, is what makes the system feel effortless later. It is the same reason a designed install ages better than an attached one.
Common questions
Do permanent lights need Wi-Fi to work? The controller uses Wi-Fi so the app can reach it, and once your dusk-to-dawn schedule is set, the lights run it automatically without you doing anything. A good installer confirms the Wi-Fi reaches the controller before finishing the job.
Do I have to be home to use the lights? Not for everyday use. The dusk-to-dawn schedule runs automatically, so the lights come on and off on their own. When you want to change the color, brightness, or schedule, you do it from the app on your phone.
Do these work with Alexa or Google Home? The system we install runs from its own app and does not do voice-assistant control today. If voice or whole-home integration is a must, ask any brand directly, and see our JellyFish comparison for where that tradeoff falls.
