Tarpon Springs is the most architecturally distinctive town on this stretch of coast, and it is where our address is, so we are here constantly. The city was founded in the 1880s around Spring Bayou and Whitcomb Bayou, and the housing stock still shows it: bungalows from the 1920s, bayou-front Victorians from the 1910s, and Mediterranean Revival houses that were built to be looked at. The Greektown Historic District went onto the National Register in 2014, running north from Spring Bayou to the Anclote River. Add the sponge docks, Craig Park on the bayou, and a public golf course that has been in play since 1927. Almost none of that architecture is flat or simple, which is the whole point. Detailed older homes give a design something to actually work with, and the same street will hand you salt air off the water.
The Anclote River meets the Gulf here, wrapped around Spring Bayou and Whitcomb Bayou, with Lake Tarpon inland. Most of the town is on or near water and salt is a daily fact, so sealed connections are not a preference. The older homes bring deep porches, columns, arches, gables and real masonry texture, and the landscape has had a century to grow in around them.
This is home turf, so we are usually out fast. The old houses give us more to work with and the salt gives us more to protect against, and a design here has to answer both at once.
