What we know about lighting St. Petersburg homes
St. Petersburg holds two very different kinds of housing, and lighting has to suit both. The Historic Old Northeast is one of the most celebrated historic neighborhoods in the state, running between Tampa Bay and Coffee Pot Bayou with brick-lined streets and roughly three thousand historic homes and buildings in it, everything from Victorian to Spanish Revival to Craftsman bungalow. Snell Isle is the other side: a mile and a half of private island connected by bridges just north of downtown, full of waterfront estates and original 1920s houses built to European and Spanish designs, with the Vinoy Golf Club and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club sitting in the middle of it. Those two ask for opposite things. The historic blocks want restraint that flatters original detail instead of flattening it. The island estates can carry a bolder design and are seen from the water as well as the street.
A peninsula with Tampa Bay on one side and the Gulf on the other, so salt air is a daily fact and sealed, coastal-rated components are essential, particularly on the island and bayou-front streets. The architecture is unusually varied for Florida: genuine 1920s housing stock, brick streets, deep porches, arches and real masonry texture, all of which give a design far more to work with than a modern flat facade does.
Old Northeast wants restraint that flatters original detail instead of flattening it. Snell Isle can carry something bolder and gets judged from the water as well as the street. Both need coastal-rated hardware.

St. Petersburg lighting, answered
Our home is in St. Petersburg’s historic Old Northeast. Can lighting suit an older home?
Absolutely. On a historic home we light to flatter the existing character, warm washes on brick and architectural detail, rather than forcing a modern look onto it.
We have a waterfront home on Snell Isle. What can you light?
The house, the landscape, the entrance, and the dock, all with sealed coastal-rated fixtures, so the whole waterfront property reads together after dark and holds up to the salt air.
Are you licensed to work in Pinellas County?
Yes. Architectural Ambiance is fully licensed and insured to operate across Pinellas County. We are owner-operated, so the people who design your lighting are the same ones who install it, and we provide proof of insurance on request.
Are you licensed and insured?
