After Dark Guide

Color-Changing House Lights You Control From Your Phone

Warm white every night, any color when you want it, all from an app. Here is what app-controlled permanent lighting actually does, and what it does not.

The idea sounds like a gadget, so let us be clear about what it really is. App-controlled color is a feature of one specific product: a permanent architectural lighting system. It is not something you get from landscape lights or from traditional Christmas bulbs. If color from your phone is what you are after, this is the guide, and this is the only one of our systems that does it.

What actually changes color

The system is a slim, color-matched track built into your soffit or fascia, holding full-color RGBW LEDs along your rooflines. Each of the four letters is a real diode: red, green, blue, and a dedicated warm white. That warm-white diode is the important one, because it means the everyday white is a true warm white on its own, not a cold blue-white faked by mixing colors. You can see how the whole system installs on our Permanent Architectural Lighting page.

What the app does

Everything runs from an app on your phone. You set scenes, you set zones, and you set schedules.

Scenes are the looks: soft warm white for a normal Tuesday, red and green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, red white and blue for the Fourth, pink for a party. Zones let you light different sections of the roofline independently, so the front gable can do one thing and the garage another. Schedules mean the whole thing turns on at dusk and off at your bedtime on its own, every night, without you touching anything. Save a look once and it is a tap away next time.

The honest limits

Two things to be straight about, because plausible is not the same as true.

First, only the permanent system does this. Our landscape lighting runs a warm-white glow on timers and is not a color-changing product, and our traditional holiday lighting is premium C9 bulbs in a fixed color that we hang and take down each season. If you want color on demand from an app, it is the permanent system or nothing, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong thing.

Second, color is a feature, not the point. Most homeowners run warm white the large majority of the year and reach for color a handful of times. The value is having it on tap, not blasting saturated color every night. If you are worried about the year-round look, the do permanent lights look tacky guide covers it.

The Tampa Bay use case people love

Game day is the one that sells itself down here. Bucs red and pewter, Rays navy and light blue, Lightning blue, Gators orange and blue, all set from the couch before kickoff, then back to warm white after. It is a small thing that gets a big reaction on the block, and it costs you nothing extra once the system is in.

Common questions

Do I need to be home or on wifi to change the colors? The system is controlled through its app, and you set scenes and schedules right from your phone. Once a schedule is set, the lights run on their own each night without you doing anything.

Can landscape or Christmas lights change color too? No, and it is worth being clear on this. Only the permanent architectural system changes color. Landscape lighting is warm white with timers standard and app control optional, but it does not change colors, and traditional holiday lighting is premium C9 bulbs in a fixed color for the season.

Will full color look garish on my house? Only if you leave it running that way. The everyday setting is a soft warm white, and color is something you switch on for a holiday or a game and then switch back off.
