Landscape Lighting Maintenance: What Actually Fails, and When
The LED is almost never the problem. Here is what genuinely fails on an outdoor lighting system in Florida, roughly when, and what prevents most of it.
When a landscape lighting system stops working, almost nobody’s first guess is right. People assume the light burned out. In a modern low-voltage LED system that is close to the least likely explanation.
Here is what actually fails, roughly in order of how often we find it, plus what you can check yourself before calling anyone.
Connections, by a mile
The overwhelming majority of outdoor lighting faults are connections, not fixtures.
A landscape system has a connection at every fixture and at every branch in the run. Each one sits in wet ground, gets rained on, and in coastal areas gets salt carried onto it. A properly made connection is a sealed, gel-filled connector rated for direct burial. A badly made one is a twist cap with tape over it, which will work perfectly for a year or two and then quietly corrode.
The signature is telling: one fixture out, or a group of fixtures out from a certain point onward. Not the whole system. When a run goes dark from the third fixture on, the fault is at the third connection.
This is also why cheap installs get expensive. Finding a corroded splice in a buried run takes longer than making it properly did in the first place.
Salt, and how far inland it reaches
Coastal exposure is the accelerant on everything above.
On the canal streets in Hudson, the Gulf Harbors neighborhoods of New Port Richey, out on Clearwater’s Island Estates, or anywhere on the water in St. Petersburg, salt is on the hardware every day. It finds fastener heads, fixture seams and any connection that was not sealed.
Two things worth knowing. First, it reaches further inland than people assume: being several streets back from open water reduces the exposure, it does not remove it. Second, it is the reason fixture specification matters so much on the coast and matters far less somewhere like Spring Hill, which sits inland and dry enough that corrosion simply is not the driving failure mode.
Growth, which is not a fault but looks like one
The most common “problem” we get called about on systems more than about three years old is not a failure at all. The plants grew.
An uplight aimed perfectly at a young oak is aimed at the trunk of a mature one. A path light that cleared a bed at install is now buried in it. A fixture that lit a facade is now shooting into a palm frond that was not there before.
Nothing is broken. The design has drifted because the landscape did what landscapes do. Re-aiming and occasionally relocating a handful of fixtures restores the whole scene, and it is a fraction of the cost of anything else on this page. On properties with real canopy, in Palm Harbor, Odessa, or the older Lutz lots, it is worth expecting every few years.
Transformers
The transformer is the one component where genuine electronic failure is plausible, though it is still uncommon.
Symptom: everything is out at once. If the whole system is dark, start at the transformer rather than in the yard. Check that it has power, that a breaker or GFCI has not tripped, and that the timer or photocell is actually calling for it.
That last one catches people out. A photocell covered by mulch or an overgrown plant sees permanent darkness or permanent light and behaves accordingly. It is a two-minute fix and it looks exactly like a dead system.
Transformers that run hard for years, particularly undersized ones running near capacity, will eventually go. Sizing one with headroom at install is cheap insurance.
Lenses, seals and water intrusion
Fixtures fail when water gets inside, and water gets inside when a seal or gasket goes.
Symptom: a fogged or clouded lens, or a fixture that works intermittently after rain. Once water is inside, the fixture is usually done, though the fault often traces back to the fixture having been the wrong specification for the location in the first place.
Well lights, which sit in the ground and take standing water after Florida afternoon storms, are the hardest working fixtures in this respect and the ones where housing quality shows up soonest.
The LED itself, last on the list
Quality outdoor LEDs are rated in the tens of thousands of hours. At dusk-to-dawn use that is years, and in practice the diode almost never dies before something around it does. LED lifetime is measured as an L70 figure, the operating hours before output falls 30 percent below new, defined under IES standard LM-80; the US Department of Energy’s fact sheet on lifetime and reliability of LED lighting explains why a single number never tells the whole story.
What you will notice long before failure is gradual dimming, and if one fixture looks noticeably different from its neighbors the answer is usually a connection or water intrusion rather than the diode.
What you can check before calling anyone
In rough order:
- Whole system dark? Go to the transformer. Power, breaker, GFCI, timer, photocell. Check the photocell is not buried in mulch or shaded by a plant.
- One section dark from a point onward? The connection at the first dark fixture is the prime suspect.
- One fixture dark? Its own connection, then the fixture.
- Fogged lens or intermittent after rain? Water has got in. That fixture needs replacing.
- Everything works but it looks wrong? Nothing has failed. It needs re-aiming.
That covers most of what people call about, and steps 1 and 5 are genuinely fixable without a truck.
What prevents most of it
- Sealed direct-burial connectors at every joint, made properly the first time.
- Coastal-rated housings and stainless fasteners if you are anywhere near the water. This is the single biggest specification decision on a waterfront property.
- A transformer sized with headroom, not one running at the edge of its rating.
- Re-aiming every few years as things grow. Budget for it as maintenance, not as a repair.

Common questions
How often does landscape lighting need servicing? A well-installed system in an inland location can go years without attention beyond re-aiming. On the coast, an annual look is sensible, mostly to catch corrosion before it becomes a fault.
Can you service a system somebody else installed? Usually. Tell us what it is doing and roughly how old it is. If it is halogen and over about ten years old we will probably tell you replacement makes more sense than repair, and explain why rather than just quoting it.
Do the fixtures need cleaning? Lenses pick up film, especially near the coast and under trees. A wipe restores more output than people expect and costs nothing.
Is it worth repairing an old halogen system? Rarely. Halogen draws far more power, the fixtures are usually at end of life anyway, and the light quality is not comparable to modern warm-white LED. Our landscape lighting page covers what a current system involves.
